How did the ministry begin?
We THINK the Vaughn's were instrumental in the beginning.
They are deceased. The group started up in Fairburn before we had a church. Many think it was the late 80's or very early 90's to start.
How has it evolved, if any?
Over the years some nice trips were taken, that has not happened in recent years do to cost and infirmities. Frank Pfarr, organized a cruise last year for a few folks who chose to go. I think 6 people went.
How many members are part of this ministry?
Our group is about 45 right now. In early years it was about 15-20 according to Jackie D.
Almost without exception everyone in the group is active in other ministries, Circle of Friends, Church cleaning, craft guild, Knights of Columbus and others.
Who can join?
It is open to anyone 50 years old or over
What exactly do you do?
Mostly the group just gets together to visit and keep up with each other.
Mike and I have chaired for two years and we have lost many members due to death. We keep inviting people and have had some success just recently in getting some new blood.
How often do you meet, and what happens at the meetings?
The group is social, we meet on the second Mon. of the month in the evening from 6-8. Everyone brings a dish to share.
What do you take away?
I think the biggest take away for most would be that friendship and caring are first and foremost. If someone misses we call to see what
happened and if they are OK. Good to know someone at church has you in mind, especially if you are widowed or single.
What have you enjoyed the most?
We occasionally play games, Helen always presents a list of those who need prayer.
Last year we also had the folks to our home for a picnic. We try to mix up the meetings a little for variety. Frank Pfarr always sends out a reminder e-mail for the meetings and also has a list of birthdays and anniversaries for the month. All those get to be in line FIRST to eat. This seems to be a big deal to many, much poking and laughter!!!
